The reaped green leaf should be handled with great care. This is done to avoid any blemish which can lower the quality of the cured leaf. Curing develops and preserves the potential quality; flavour and the aroma of tobacco in the barn, Effort should be made to ensure the leaf attains the desired colour. The colour of the leaf is indicative of the chemical composition. Therefore, the colour of the leaf is very important. This course is designed to bring all the necessary knowledge and skills, to bring about the desired leaf for the market.

Course Objective

At the end of the course the participants should be able to:

  • Handle the fresh tobacco leaf carefully.
  • Correctly load the tobacco barn.
  • Correctly cure flue cured Virginia tobacco.
  • Demonstrate how to correctly condition tobacco leaf.
  • Explain the methods of temporal tobacco storage.
  • Demonstrate how to grade flue cured Virginia tobacco
  • Explain in full methods of baling tobacco.

Introduction
Barn capacity and barn loading
Curing of flue cured Virginia tobacco
Conditioning and temporal storage.
Flue cured Virginia tobacco grading and baling.

The course will be conducted using lectures, excursions, hand-outs, case studies and group discussions. Highly qualified training personnel, with extensive experience and practical field work will conduct the training sessions. Candidates will be provided with reading materials well in advance.
